Towards India’s Sustainable Future: Dow India Launches PE-PE Monomaterial Packaging Solution

Mumbai, India - August 22, 2016

  • Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics business unit conducted an outreach event as well as demo of the new technology for 50+ select representatives of flexible packaging manufacturers as well as brand owners at a value chain partner facility in Goa
  • The Polyethylene-based PE-PE monomaterial laminate solution is a part of sustainable flexible packaging solutions from Dow India and will enable much more effective recycling and reuse of flexible packaging material, thus fuelling a sustainable circular economy and help brand owners comply with evolving government regulations regarding plastic packaging In India

“Currently, what is it that deters effective recycling and reuse of the flexible packaging that packs products, such as salt, flour, detergent and many other food products? It is a fact that this packaging uses multiple materials that are incompatible while recycling, thus impacting quality of recycled material. What would make the whole plastic waste management and recycling effort much more meaningful and economical is adoption of packaging using monomaterial to design a sustainable solution – an all-Polyethylene (PE) laminate. This enables us to make film that does not impact packaging quality or performance, but generates completely reusable material upon recycling,” elaborated Vipul Babu, Commercial Director for Indian Subcontinent, Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics, summing up the monomaterial laminate solution for the gathering.

The gathering in question comprised of senior decision-makers representing flexible packaging manufacturers as well as brand owners. For most in the audience, this is the solution whose time has come, as it is extremely relevant to the discussion on sustainable policies around plastic waste in India today.

In the outreach event hosted at a value chain partner facility in Verna Industrial Estate in Salcete, Goa, P&SP team led by Mark Saurin, Commercial Vice President for Asia Pacific and Vipul Babu, presented the all-PE packaging solution, including new product offerings in India: INNATE™ resins and RETAIN™ compatibilizer that allows recycling of co-extruded barrier films consisting of PE, Nylon and EVOH resins.

Speaking about this initiative, Mark Saurin said: “Our sustainable packaging solutions line has been successful globally. In India, this is an opportune time to talk about some of these technologies because of the recent Plastic Waste Management policy of Government of India that looks to address this issue in a more sustainable way. PE-PE laminate solution is an effective way to create a Circular Economy around plastic waste management.”

Apart from Dow presentations on the technology, the event also included:

  • Case studies on PE-based laminates and co-extruded barrier films to address oxygen-barrier requirement of certain products
  • Launch of RETAIN™ compatibilizer
  • Live demo of PE-PE laminate
  • A vibrant, interactive Q&A and feedback session with those present

Through this event, Dow India demonstrated the power of collaboration among value chain partners to offer practical solutions to the recyclability challenge faced by flexible packaging industry.
